The depth of this image in it’s background made the photo stand out, and like so many others, I kept looking at it until compelled to paint it. It was really my first great challenge at this level of detail, and also I felt an establishment of a signature style, which is realism over and against a bokeh background. My roots in photography are never far. I love the depth in this one, and the colors.

Stephen is Steven Curtis of the Madison area in Wisconsin. I didn't grow up here, but it's a great place to land. I grew up in the flat lands of the center of Illiniois, dominated by pollen from corn, beans, and dust. It was good for the imagination. I was an artist from childhood, and started work in photography in my early 20s, culminating in a degree in Film, and have managed a videography business. Central to all of these was composition. In cinema, it's known as "mise-en-scene", or arrangement. The challenge of that is that cinema moves, and has sound. It is multi-disciplinary. I have rerturned now later in life to the more pure forms of art in still representations, working in oil paints, primarily on wood panels. It was the wood panel that allowed me to finally conquer oil painting, as previous to 2013 I had never had success with it. The smooth surface of the wood panel allowed m...

So I spend time searching out images and recreating beauty as I find it. That in turn has shaped my vision and stretched me personally in ways unexpected. There are many photos, both by others and myself, that have already done that work for me, and come “pre-packaged” as balanced works of art, and these are “finds” for me, a sig...
