I painted this in early October, when the leaves began to turn. Colors of gold, pale pink, and dusty orange appeared on the landscape, under gray skies. But having my fill of the hot summer, I found the changing landscape restful.

Ryan builds Early Autumn from flat geometric planes set against a chalky, worked white field. The palette carries the season she names: dusty pink, pale peach, muted slate blue, mustard yellow, and small accents of black and deep rust, all separated by crisp edges and a few angled cuts that keep the composition active. The surface is handled with visible abrasion and layering, so the color blocks sit over a ground that retains scuffs, scrapes, and faint underpainting, giving the work a tactile, weathered luminosity. The painting belongs to the lineage of geometric abstraction and hard-edge color painting, with a painterly pressure that keeps it from feeling mechanical.
