I painted this in the springtime. It was a warm day, and I opened my windows to hear the sounds of birds chirping. There were blackbirds, common house finches, and even some seagulls, because I live about five miles from the ocean.

The eye meets a radiant field of vertical color bands that lock the composition into a steady, front-facing rhythm. Ryan builds the surface through flat acrylic passages and visible brush handling, stacking saturated blues, yellows, reds, coral, aqua, and greens into narrow registers that keep the painting in constant visual motion. The occasional diagonal interruption breaks the gridlike order and gives the work its pulse, aligning it with postwar abstraction, hard-edge color painting, and the lyrical geometry of artists who treat chromatic structure as an emotional instrument. Its energy comes from the tension between clarity and variation: each band reads as cleanly articulated, yet the whole painting vibrates with hand-made irregularity.
