12 X 24 IN. OIL ON LINEN CANVAS. 1/2 IN. DEPTH. GALLERY WRAPPED PAINTED EDGES. My first love in the arts was really photography, and it shows in almost all my works, the majority of them highlighting a crisp image in focus on a bokeh background. My next venture in the arts was in cinema, where light and screen direction are everything. This painting captures a bit of both. The stillness in this image is almost palpable. It’s like that moment that you see a mote of dust floating in sunlight, and it’s quiet, the mote gently falling. The position of the lady’s head is like one leaning into the stillness to hear something, someone. Possibly listening for a still small voice. The light here is a warm and all-enclosing light, hopefully comforting in nature, inviting, like the open windows. I can almost hear distant children, or a bird. We capture moments like this in time, like the photograph for this did, and I found a real spirit in this as a painted work. It’s actually my first experience with linen as the canvas. Wonderful. Will be working with that more.

Stephen is Steven Curtis of the Madison area in Wisconsin. I didn't grow up here, but it's a great place to land. I grew up in the flat lands of the center of Illiniois, dominated by pollen from corn, beans, and dust. It was good for the imagination. I was an artist from childhood, and started work in photography in my early 20s, culminating in a degree in Film, and have managed a videography business. Central to all of these was composition. In cinema, it's known as "mise-en-scene", or arrangement. The challenge of that is that cinema moves, and has sound. It is multi-disciplinary. I have rerturned now later in life to the more pure forms of art in still representations, working in oil paints, primarily on wood panels. Artist Statement
My artist adventure is deeply rooted in the capture and preservation of beauty. This is a controversial point however since “beauty is fleeting”, but it’s also been posited that “beauty will save the world”. Not to mention that it is highly subjective, or so it seems. So I spend time searching out images and recreating beauty as I find it. That in turn has shaped my vision and stretched me personally in ways unexpected.
