This bright pink, green, red, and blue abstract acrylic painting on canvas was inspired by the holiday season-- all the bright lights, colorful gift wraps, and shoppers hurrying by. The grid composition signifies city streets.

Holiday meets the eye as a bright, interlocking field of rectangular color, organized by a clear grid that keeps the composition taut. Vanessa Ryan builds the surface with layered acrylic blocks in pink, mint, turquoise, coral, ultramarine, and red, so the painting reads as both planar and handmade, with brushwork and slight irregularities holding the structure alive. The cream-colored vertical and horizontal bands function like city streets, converting festive chroma into an urban map. In its balance of non-objective color, rhythmic partition, and chromatic optimism, Ryan’s work carries forward early abstraction and post-modern painting with a crisp contemporary finish.
