Butte at Sunset is an 8 by 10-inch print on aluminum that reflects my impression of Thumb Butte, a landmark overlooking Prescott, AZ. The composition brings together warm reds, ochres, and yellows at the center, moving outward into darker, earthier tones on one side and cooler blues and greens on the other. The brushwork is expressive and textured, conveying movement and depth without relying on recognizable forms. This piece marks a new step for me in letting go of details to capture the feeling of the place through color and energy rather than representation. Easy care with just a cloth Ready to hang. Fred Wilson sets Thumb Butte into a field of heat and atmosphere, and the image is read first through the blaze of yellows, oranges, and red-browns gathered at the center. The surface carries loose, brushlike marks and layered transitions that create depth without literal contour, so the landform emerges as sensation rather than topography. Cooler blues and greens at the edges steady the composition and sharpen the central mass, giving the work a clear push and pull between warmth and distance. The piece is in conversation with postwar lyrical abstraction and color-field landscape traditions, where place is translated through chromatic energy and painterly velocity.

Key Facts

  • Location: Prescott Valley, AZ

Fred Wilson, a visionary artist, was propelled into the world of creativity after relocating to Arizona in the 1970s. Originally a successful marketing and design management professional, he nurtured his artistry as a passionate hobby, a self-enrichment journey rather than a conventional occupation. A transformative period of mentorship with fellow artists ignited a fervor for painting within him, prompting him to trade his corporate life for the artist's palette. For several years, Fred championed the art scene in Prescott by owning and operating his own gallery. Eventually, he retired from his managerial role to immerse himself fully in the exquisite realm of painting. His distinct artistic approach manifests in his preference for miniature and ACEO formats, a testament to his love for the demanding task of infusing depth and detail into a compact canvas.
