This 11" x 17" drawing in pencil and charcoal on mixed media paper is a detailed side-view portrait of a classic 19th-century American steam locomotive, rendered with careful attention to mechanical features and historical accuracy. The piece evokes the grandeur and romance of the railroad era, capturing the engine in a stationary yet proud pose on the tracks.

Graham’s drawing is built around the locomotive’s profile, which gives the composition immediate clarity and force: the engine stretches horizontally across the page, anchored by the track line and the forward thrust of the cowcatcher. Graphite and charcoal create a restrained monochrome field in which the dark furnace body, smokestack, and wheel assemblies carry the heaviest tonal weight, while lighter paper reserves keep the forms breathing. The surface is worked with layered pencil pressure, crosshatching, and smudged shading that register cast iron, rivets, wheel spokes, and the rhythm of mechanical fittings with an engineer’s attention to structure. The work stands in conversation with 19th-century industrial drawing and the documentary precision of American railroad imagery, where utility and monumentality meet in a single image.

Artist Statement

Artist Statement My name is SGT Ben Graham, and every piece you see here is more than just art — it is a living thank-you and a way for me to give back. As a wounded veteran, I create because it keeps me moving, focused, and connected when my disabilities try to hold me back. The true price of my work is not for profit. What you pay is a donation. That donation first covers the cost of the supplies I need to keep creating.
