26 X 36 IN. A 20 X 30 IN. OIL ON WOOD PANEL PAINTING MOUNTED IN A CUSTOM DESIGNED WOOD FRAME 26 X 36 IN. TOTAL. Always fascinated with nature, and the intricate details of animals, I challenged myself on this one, as it was a bit more difficult than others I’ve attempted. Going larger is one way to be able to include details that are otherwise elusive. That paid off here. The frame, however, is another effort worth mentioning, in that it was inspired by the subject, and completely original in concept. Those marks, made by a grinder, are like claw marks, almost as if the owl was attempting to leave the painting. I enjoyed making this one, and very proud of the result.

I was an artist from childhood, and started work in photography in my early 20s, culminating in a degree in Film, and have managed a videography business. Central to all of these was composition. In cinema, it's known as "mise-en-scene", or arrangement. The challenge of that is that cinema moves, and has sound. It is multi-disciplinary. I have rerturned now later in life to the more pure forms of art in still representations, working in oil paints, primarily on wood panels. It was the wood panel that allowed me to finally conquer oil painting, as previous to 2013 I had never had success with it. The smooth surface of the wood panel allowed m...

Artist Statement

My artist adventure is deeply rooted in the capture and preservation of beauty. This is a controversial point however since “beauty is fleeting”, but it’s also been posited that “beauty will save the world”. Not to mention that it is highly subjective, or so it seems. So I spend time searching out images and recreating beauty as I find it. That in turn has shaped my vision and stretched me personally in ways unexpected. There are many photos, both by others and myself, that have already done that work for me, and come “pre-packaged” as balanced works of art, and these are “finds” for me, a sig...
