There was a point in my life I had submerged to the bottom of a pool's deep end during the night. As the sounds vibrated to a deep murmur. I stared into the vast abyss, my peripheral vision of the floor and walls faded into a mass of darkness ahead of me. I hovered there open and vulnerable staring into a nothingness infinite, and in this vast space I couldn’t help but brace myself for impact. Yet I know nothing was physically there. It was a moment that shaped my life, and many years later I realized there was something there. It was my imagination reflecting back that had moved my body into protection. When I created this piece, I thought of that moment. The overwhelming feeling that engulfed my being. To be mesmerized and lost within its depths, feeling vulnerable and instinctively trying to protect oneself. Love is much like this, the vast infinite pool, no walls for protection, no comforts of air, or grounding of gravity, just the infinite capacity of love in the scariest of places. A place where there is nothing but the vulnerable reflections of self. And yet I have found in life, we keep traveling to such a place, searching, and feeling our way through. Looking and looking, and at one moment we realize that what we were looking for, this light, this cord of connection, is self. The love in which we seek is the love in which we reflect. That of which we seek to protect is self-love. And in many moments, we find ourselves trying to protect this love from our own selves, by constructing walls, comforts, and fears. Manifesting what closes the connection instead of opening it. Yet the connection is never out of reach no matter how lost we may feel as love seems to be just as infinite as the abyss in which we stare into. And if this is the case, staring into the infinite that is our self-reflection, then it can be true that we are just the infinite searching for love within.

About Justin Garcia

Justin Garcia, Born Houstonian, is influenced by the timeless connection between art and science studied by DaVinci. His lifelong fascination with aging and how change occurs over time led him to undergo a deep self-psychoanalysis through the abstraction of his first seven series spanning over a decade. All of Garcia’s earlier works are pieces of a larger puzzle. To analyze, document, and assemble this puzzle, he took two years away from the art scene, several months of which he spent isolated in central Mexico. There, he mapped and constructed a theoretical model that captures the intersection of experience, awareness, and control across time and subject matter (Humanity’s Sustainable Infinite (HSI)) . In late 2015, he announced the completion and publication of his first book, One Ton Goldfish: In Search of the Tangible Dream , a retrospective of his seven series in which Garcia’s pers...

Artist Statement

Art is an expression of the mind’s endless creativity, a doorway to everything in which humans are en-gaged. My work is the continuous result of studying a single question: Why ? My work focuses on the complexity of time and the human perception of it through the simplicity of aging walls as architectural structures representing reality. It is precisely the walls all around us that bring a sense of solace when confronting concepts of time and its infinite effect. As every surface, from that of the smallest pebble to the largest planet, is a wall, and every wall is a surface subjected to time....
